Microsoft Lumia 730 is billed as the master of the selfie

Microsoft Lumia 730 is billed as the master of the selfi

The selfie phenomenon has taken the world by storm, and smartphone vendors have adeptly adapted to the trend by offering improved cameras on the front of their devices. Microsoft's Lumia phones, which are known for their imaging capabilities, have been slightly behind the curve for selfies. But not anymore as the technology giant launched the Lumia 730 on Wednesday. In many ways, it is the spiritual successor of the acclaimed Nokia Lumia 720, but now packs a punch with its front camera.
Shaped like its predecessor, the 730 flaunts a curved back similar to the Lumia 920. At 8.7mm, it is thicker than the 830, but appears to be thinner. It is very comfortable to hold and incredibly light at 130 grams.
Its 4.7-inch 720P screen appeared to be crisp and had good viewing angles, though we did not watch any videos or use it under direct sunlight.
On the back, it has a 6.7-megapixel camera with an f/1.9 aperture and ZEISS optics. We did not test it, though its specs are similar to the camera found on the Lumia 720, which means it should be decent.
But the big deal is the 5-megapixel camera on the front. It has a 24mm lens, which Microsoft claims is wider than what the iPhone 5S and the Samsung Galaxy S5 have. In our time with the device, we found the claim to be true, but we are reserving judgement on the picture quality for the review.
There is a new Lumia selfie camera app for this camera, which Lumia users can also download on other devices. It has a neat UI which offers a bunch of editing and photo morphing options. One can even set a timer for the image.
Specs wise, it is largely similar to the Lumia 830 as it powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU clocked at 1.2GHz with 1GB of RAM. It also has 8GB of internal memory expandable via a microSD slot. It has a 2,00mAh a battery.
While the performance was fine, we did encounter a glitch where the phone froze and refused to respond to our touch inputs. The Microsoft employees claimed it was a charging glitch due to Kensington locks they were using on the demo units.
Another notable feature of the phone is that it has dual-SIM capabilities.
Of the three Lumia phones that Microsoft launched on Tuesday, for us the Lumia 730 perhaps was the most impressive one considering its Rs.15,299 price. That said, we have not even tested the cameras, the battery life and even the general performance of the product. We advise you wait for our in-depth review of the phone before you decide to buy or not buy it.

Sony Xperia Z3 review: Pricey but premium experience

In less than a year after it launched the Xperia Z2, Sony has come out with Xperia Z3. Announced at recently held IFA 2014, Berlin, along with its younger brother the Xperia Z3 Compact, the Z3 is the new flagship Android phone from Sony. When it comes to Sony smartphones, India is among the first countries to get them after their global launch. With the Z3 too, it is the same. We have been testing the product for more than a week. Read on to find if it is any good.
Design
When you look at the Sony Xperia Z3, it is easy to mistake it for the Xperia Z2. It seems as if Sony has gone into the 'designer's block' similar to that of Samsung, giving its next-generation smartphones just minor tweaks. But a closer look reveals some differences. The Xperia Z3 measures 5.75 x 2.83 x 0.29 inch (146 x 72 x 7.3 mm), making it slightly shorter, narrower, and much slimmer than the Z2. The device has tall looks due to its 5.2 -inch diagonal display. It is taller than competing phones like the Galaxy S5 and the HTC One (M8), which makes it a bit unwieldy.
It is possible to use the Z3 with a single hand, but it is in no way a pocket friendly smartphone.
Sony uses 'OmniBalance' design language for the Xperia series. The sleek metal-and-glass unibody of the Z3 is part of this design. The device has rounded edges, something that would help users carry it. The glass on the back of the Z3 is a fingerprint magnet. On the black Z3, these fingerprints and smudges are easily visible. The white one fares better in this aspect. It looks neat and the smudges are not all that easily visible on it.
Display
The display on the Sony Xperia Z3 is very good. The 5.2-inch screen has a resolution 1080x1920 pixels. Sony claims the Z3 display can hit a peak of 600 nits of brightness. While we haven't calculated the numbers in absolute terms, we can confirm the Z3 display is very bright. This makes using it in sunlight a great experience. It is easy to read text on it, even if you are directly under the sun.
Sony Xperia Z3 review: Pricey but premium experience
Sony Xperia Z3 review: Pricey but premium experience
The colours are on the cooler side for our liking. They are also not as saturated as the colours on an AMOLED display. Though Sony's proprietary X-Reality engine does a good job of boosting colours to enhance saturation and contrast. However, we feel it could have done a better job.
We also think the Xperia Z2 offered better colour fidelity than the Xperia Z3. But viewing angles on the phone are better than what users got on the previous Xperia phones. Overall the display is really good.
Software
The Sony Xperia Z3 offers a UI that has some small little goodies that will put a smile on your face. For example, you can double tap on the display to wake up the phone. It runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system but comes with Sony's Xperia user interface. The UI is clean and has been kept minimalistic. Sony has changed the look and feel of some stock apps, but mostly it is for the better.
One great feature that we found on the Z3 was the screen recording function. To record what you are doing on the phone, you can long press the power button and choose from a 1080P or 720P video recording. This feature was introduced on Android KitKat but not many manufacturers have used it. There are also third-party screen recording apps available but they are usually paid apps and not that good. The Sony's screen recording feature is easy to use and has been implemented well on the Z3.
The Z3 includes Sony's DSEE HX (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) technology, which upscales audio tracks (MP3, AAC). The hi-res quality for audio is attained by analysing and enhancing the files, the frequency range, and by reducing noise and distortion. This is a great feature that audiophiles will appreciate, and the difference is quite evident. There is also support for noise cancelling headphones. The Sony Xperia Z3 comes with front-facing stereo speakers, but they are nowhere close to HTC Boomsound speakers found in the HTC One (M8).
Performance
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor powers the Z3, which is one of the best processors smartphones can currently use. The processor is clocked at 2.5GHz. Overall performance is seamless and smooth whether you are working in apps like Facebook or playing 3D games. The phone does not lag at all. But the prolonged gaming sessions tend to heat up the device a little bit. We tried games like Dead Trigger 2 and Real Racing 3 and the Xperia Z3 was quite responsive and ran these games well.
If you care about the RAM in your phone, you will be happy to know that Sony is giving generous 3GB RAM in the Z3. On board, internal storage is 16GB and the usable space is around 12GB. There is also a microSD card slot that can be used to expand storage. Up to 128GB cards can be used with the Z3.
Camera
Camera is one of the most used features on a smartphone. And we feel that you will love the Z3 camera. The Z3 offers the same 20.7-megapixel 1/2.3" Exmor image sensor that we saw on the Z2. The size of pixels -- 1.12 micron -- is also same. The major difference is that the Z3 has a new 25mm G Lens (f2.0). The large image sensor also allows Sony to offer ISO of 12800 in the Z3. Though such high ISO is useless in a smartphone -- the sensor is too small -- it is nice to know that the functionality is there.
The Z3's camera app is easy to use, especially the Superior Auto mode, which attempts to automatically pick the best settings for you, depending on the scene you are trying to capture. The Superior Auto mode shoots at 8-megapixels out of the box, but it does use the full resolution of the 20-megapixel sensor. It scales down the images so you end up with high-quality 8-megapixel photos. There are also some other interesting camera modes in the Z3. For example, there is Info Shot, which attempts to give you useful information about the object that you're photographing.
The images that we shot with the Z3 were good and balanced. The images shot in low light were also mostly noise free and clear. The images captured in daylight have natural tones and are clean. The 2.2-megapixel front-facing shooter does a good job for selfies, with natural colours and details in good light. In low light, the performance of the front camera is not good.
With the Z3 you can also do 1080P video recording, either in 30FPS or more smoother 60FPS. The "steady shot" gives clear and sharp video footage and the stabilisation while panning and tilting is amazing. The Z3 is also capable of shooting 4K video. Though the phone captures a lot of detail in the 4K mode, it also heats up the device and takes a lot of space on the internal storage.
Battery life
The Z3 has a 3100mAh, non-removable battery. While using the device, we found that it lasts full day of use with ease. According to the company's spec sheet, the Z3 offers 16 hours of 3G talk time or 37 days of stand-by time. It is also capable of delivering up to 130 hours of continuous music listening, or up to 10 hours of video playback. But don't go by big numbers. This is a power-hungry smartphone and even if you are very careful with how you use it, the device will not last more than 24 hours on one full charge.
Should you buy it?
Rs.51,990 is a steep price for a smartphone. In fact, the Z3 is just slightly cheaper than the iPhone 6, which will go on sale from October 17 in India. That being true, the Z3 is also an exceptional smartphone. It ticks all the right boxes. It has a good screen, a good camera, fast performance, and superb battery life. It even throws in a slim design which is water resistant, and that is one trick the iPhone cannot replicate. Arguably, at the moment, it is the best large-screen Android smartphone in the market.

Apple releases keyboard for single-hand usage on iOS 8

Apple releases keyboard for single-hand usage on iOS 8
Apple releases keyboard for single-hand usage on iOS 8
With the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus one-handed typing on the iPhones is not easy. These new phones are larger than previous iPhones and are similar to many modern Android phones. To make one-handed typing easier, Apple has released a dedicated app called the one handed keyboard on the App Store.
This app works as a third party keyboard like SwiftKey. It offers a keyboard which is the same size as the keyboard on the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5.
Such a feature is already baked into competing Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 3.
While the one-handed keyboard is nice addition, the keyboard does not add the auto-correct functionality that is found in the stock iOS8 keyboard.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have significantly larger screens than previous iPhones. While two-handed typing is easier, people who prefer single-handed typing struggle as the phones (particularly the iPhone 6 Plus) become unwieldy in the hand.
For the longest time Apple has propagated, single-hand usage of its phones. With the larger screens of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple loses the lure of single-hand usage, but it mitigates matters by adding features like 'Reachability' and now, the new 'one handed keyboard'.

Xiaomi will launch RedMi Note by the end of November

Xiaomi will launch RedMi Note by the end of November
Xiaomi will launch RedMi Note by the end of November
Xiaomi, the Chinese phone maker that has created buzz in India with its aggressively low priced-products, was hoping to launch the RedMi Note around Diwali. But it looks like there is some delay. The company is facing some logistic problems due to the festive season in India and is now hoping to bring the RedMi Note, a phablet with 5.5-inch screen, to India by end of November.
Hugo Barra, vice president international markets at Xiaomi, told IndiaToday.in that the company was still ironing out a few logistic issues ahead of the RedMi Note launch. "This month is interesting because this is Diwali here and bringing the device in large quantities is turning out to be much more difficult. We can't even charter a plan to bring units to India from factories in China due to the rush," said Barra.
He added that the company was also polishing the RedMi Note software. "Depending on the feedback we have got for the earlier products that we launched here, we want more thorough field testing for the RedMi Note in India. We are using the latest MiUI software on it and trying it out in various conditions. In India, weather is hotter compared to most of the other markets where we sell RedMi Note. We want to make sure that when the product reaches market, it is flawless," said Barra.
Xiaomi has already announced the price for the RedMi Note. It has been priced at Rs.9,999. The device is powered by an octa-core processor running at 1.7GHz. It has 2GB RAM, 720P screen resolution, support for two SIM cards, 8GB internal storage and provision to add up to 32GB microSD card. The device has a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera.
While the RedMi Note launch is delayed slightly, Barra said that for now there is no change in the Mi 4 launch plan. "We are hoping to bring the Mi 4 to India by the end of this year or early next year. That remains the plan… and we will launch Mi 4 with the MiUI 6," he said.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 launched in India at Rs.58,300

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 launched in India at Rs.58,300
Samsung on Tuesday launched the Galaxy Note 4 in India at a price of Rs.58,300. The phablet will be available in stores from October 17, which incidentally is the same day when Apple's phablet -- the iPhne 6 Plus -- will go on sale.
The Galaxy Note 4 uses Samsung's new design language -- similar to the one in the Galaxy Alpha -- and has a metal frame around its body. The back cover of the device has the faux-leather type finish.
Commenting at the launch, Mr. Asim Warsi, VP, Mobile & IT, Samsung India said, "The launch of Galaxy Note 4 highlights Samsung's commitment to deliver iconic and differentiated products. The new device exhibits people inspired innovation with its unique combination of an enhanced S Pen, large and vivid display and superior productivity features to provide the most refined Galaxy experience to our customers."
The Indian version of the Galaxy Note 4 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor running at 2.7GHz. The device has 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage, which can be further expanded with a microSD card slot.
The Note 4 has a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. The screen has a 2.5D curved glass. This means it has bigger and sharper, at least on paper, display than the one in the Apple iPhone 6 Plus, which will be its chief competitor.
The Galaxy Note 4 has a fingerprint scanner in its home-button as well as a heart rate monitor placed near the rear camera.
The camera on the Note 4 sees a big upgrade from the Note 3. Not only the resolution goes up now to 16 megapixels, but it also features a phase detect auto-focus system and optical image stabilisation. The Galaxy S5 and the latest iPhones also use phase detect auto-focus system.
The front camera has a 3.7-megapixel resolution. The Note 4 has a 3220mAh battery. It runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat, topped with TouchWiz users interface. In India, the phone supports LTE networks in the country, so Samsung has avoided the faux-pass it committed with the launch of the Galaxy S5 as the phone launched without LTE, though later on the company launched a LTE variant of the same.
Samsung said that the new Note has a much improved stylus. "This new S Pen offers a much more authentic pen experience, with a more natural brush effect that perfectly emulates writing on paper with a fountain or calligraphy pen. The S Pen serves as the key to a more user-friendly Air Command functionality with intuitive features such as Action Memo, Smart Select, Image Clip and Screen Write that allow users to create and collect content with ease," said the company.

Android One Phones May Find It Tough in India Market: IDC

Android One Phones May Find It Tough in India Market: IDC
Android One Phones May Find It Tough in India Market: IDC
Google's ambitious move to address the fragmented Android ecosystem with its Andoid One devices will help in redefining the affordable smartphone segment, but the Indian market will be a tough call for the US-based tech giant, feels research firm IDC.
Last month, Google launched Android One range of devices in partnership with Indian handset makers MicromaxKarbonn and Spice and mobile operators like Airtel and Reliance. The smartphones are priced Rs. 6,299 onwards.
"Despite significant marketing spend already in evidence on Android One, IDC believes India will be a tough crucible for Google. Blocked out of China, Google has no choice but to make a large downstream investment in the next billion consumer segment in India," the research firm said.
India is the first country where the California-based firm's Android One devices have been launched. Roll out across other markets like Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka will follow in coming months.
Success in this segment will greatly enhance their ability to leverage Android to drive adoption by the Next Billion of the Google consumer cloud, it added.
"IDC believes that Android One is crucial for Google to execute on its strategy to leverage the fast-growing Android user base to drive engagement for its increasing portfolio of essential Google services, including search, Maps, Google Now and others," it said.
A consistent user experience, or at least a vastly improved one, will greatly increase engagement and ultimately revenues, IDC added.
The research firm said it expects Android One will attract significant sales and redefine the affordable smartphone segment by reshaping the mid tier with a range of devices that feature good enough device specifications for a fraction of the price compared to flagship devices.
It added that Android One will go further and effectively create a bipolar pear shaped environment where the high end will be dominated by the likes of Apple and Samsungwith their iPhone and Galaxy flagship devices and the low end will increasingly converge around $100 (approx. Rs. 6,122) Average Selling Price (ASP) benchmark.

New York Poised to End School Cell Phone Ban

New York Poised to End School Cell Phone Ban
New York City is preparing to end its ban on cell phones in schools, dooming an industry that sprang up near dozens of schools where teens could park their phones in a van for a dollar a day.
Mayor Bill de Blasio - apparently the first mayor to have a child in New York City public schools while in office - promised to end the ban during his campaign and acknowledged last month that his own son brings a phone to Brooklyn Technical High School.
He gave no date for ending the ban but said that for parents it's "very, very important to know how to reach their kids."
The out-of-sight, out-of-mind rule is already the de facto policy at most New York City high schools including Brooklyn Tech, where Dante de Blasio is a senior. Even with the phone ban still on the books, students at those schools are told with a wink, "If we don't see it we don't know about it."
But at the 88 city school buildings where metal detectors have been installed to keep weapons out, the ban is strictly enforced because the scanners catch phones too.
Students at schools with metal detectors must either leave their phones at home or shell out for storage. For those students, many of whom have spent hundreds of dollars to store phones and other gadgets over their high school careers, the ban can't end soon enough.
"This costs a dollar every day and it's a pain to get in that line just so I can get my phone back so I can go home," 16-year-old Adam Scully said after retrieving his phone from the bright blue Pure Loyalty Electronic Device Storage van parked outside the Washington Irving High School complex near Manhattan's Union Square.
Adam said leaving his phone at home is not an option, adding, "It's not because I'm overly attached to my phone. It's because my mom might need to contact me."
Parents of teens who attend schools with metal detectors say they too would welcome an end to the phone ban.
Walter McIntyre, who has two children at Clara Barton High School in Brooklyn, said he currently drives his children to school and holds on to their phones during the school day - even though many of their classmates leave their phones in a van.
"They don't trust them in those places," McIntyre said. "They don't want to lose their phones because they know they're not getting another one."
The security issue came to the fore when a Pure Loyalty van was robbed in the Bronx in June of 2012 and hundreds of students lost their phones.
Advocates urged then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg to end the phone ban after the robbery but he stood firm.
De Blasio said he had other priorities after taking office Jan. 1 such as expanding access to pre-kindergarten. But he promised that the phone ban would end soon.
City education officials say they are formulating a policy that includes sanctions against using a phone to cheat as several dozen students at the selective Stuyvesant High School did in 2012, forcing the principal into retirement.
A policy that allows phones inside a school but tells students to keep them stowed during class will bring New York in line with other large school districts such as Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta.
The phone-storage operators, who saw a need and created an industry unique to entrepreneurial New York, say they know their days are numbered.
"There'll be a lot of people who will not be working. That's never a good thing," said David Perez, a Pure Loyalty employee who answered the phone at the number painted on the company's vans.
Pure Loyalty was started in 2010 by correction officer Vernon Alcoser, who has since sold the business.
A Pure Loyalty split-off known as UCT operates a van parked outside the Norman Thomas High School complex, where teens retrieve their phones in the shadow of the Empire State Building.
Asked about the cell phone ban's demise, a man who answered at the number on the van but wouldn't give his name said: "It's going to put me out of business but what can I do?"

Huawei Honor 6 Clocked 10,000 Sales in 48 Hours, Says Company

Huawei Honor 6 Clocked 10,000 Sales in 48 Hours, Says Company
Huawei announced that it sold 10,000 units of the Honor 6 smartphone in India within 48 hours of its sale commencement on Flipkart, which the company says translates to about three to four phones being sold a minute, and over 200 phones an hour. The Huawei Honor 6 was made available on the Big Billion Day sale on Flipkart which occurred on October 6.
The Chinese manufacturer says that the Honor 6 has made a new record for Huawei by generating sales faster than any of its predecessors in India.
Expressing happiness on a remarkable beginning, Allen Wang, President, Consumer Business Group, Huawei India, said, "We were pretty excited to launch our flagship device Honor6 in India. We were confident of the product as it offers best features and tech specs vis-a-vis other devices in the Rs. 30-40K price bracket. It is a moment of extreme delight for Huawei and a great start of our partnership with Flipkart. We are hopeful to do even better in the times to come."
The company had launched the smartphone in September at Rs. 19,999 along with the Huawei MediaPad Honor T1, which was priced at Rs. 9,999. Like the Honor 6 smartphone, the MediaPad Honor T1 tablet is also exclusively available via Flipkart. The tablet had gone on sale on Flipkart from October 10.
The Honor 6 available in India offers single-SIM support. It features a 5-inch JDI full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) in-cell display, translating to a pixel density of 445ppi. An octa-core Hi Silicon Kirin 920 processor powers the device with Mali T628 GPU. The Honor 6 utilises the Big.LITTLE architecture with 4xA15 1.7GHz + 4xA7 1.3GHz and 3GB of RAM.
It sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash, BSI sensor, and f2.0 aperture while there is a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The Honor 6 comes with 16GB of inbuilt storage, and can be expanded via microSD card. It supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS/A-GPS, GPRS/EDGE and 3G connectivity options. The smartphone is backed by a 3100mAh battery.

HTC One (E8 Eye) Spotted Arriving in India Alongside One (M8 Eye)
HTC appears to preparing to launch a new smartphone, the One (Eye E8), as the unannounced device has been spotted listed on an Indian import/ export website. The HTC One (M8 Eye) was also listed, indicating an imminent launch in India of therecently unveiled smartphone.
The HTC One (E8 Eye) is seen listed on Zauba in Grey and Silver colours. Other details of the alleged One (Eye E8) listing on the Zauba include per unit price at Rs. 27,275. Notably, the import/ export prices are only indicative and usually do not include duties or taxes. However, we are still expecting a sub-Rs. 30,000 price for the device.
As of now, there is no word on innards of the unannounced HTC One (E8 Eye); although it is likely that smartphone will come with same innards as the HTC One (E8) with newHTC Eye Experience camera goodies.
Apart from the HTC One (Eye E8), the One (M8 Eye) has also been spotted listed on Zauba. Some of the details listed about the One (M8 Eye) include 5-inch screen and Grey and Silver colour variants. Interestingly, the listing also tips that these smartphones will be announced in both single and dual-SIM variants. Both the unannounced HTC smartphones were first spotted by Gadgetz Arena.
Last week, HTC listed the long-rumoured One (M8 Eye) smartphone on the company's eShop shopping portal for China. The HTC One (M8 Eye) was up for pre-order at CNY 3,999 (approximately Rs. 40,000) and is expected to go on sale starting October 15. No specifications of the smartphone were listed, though it is expected to feature identical innards as the original HTC One (M8).

The processor will be either a 2.7GHz quad-core processor, or a 1.9GHz octa-core (1.9GHz quad-core + 1.3GHz quad-Core) processor - which is the variant more likely to be launched in India. Both feature 3GB of RAM.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 features a 16-megapixel autofocus rear camera with Smart OIS, and a 3.7-megapixel front-facing camera with a f/1.9 lens. MediaTek Says MT6595-Based 4G LTE Octa-Core Phones Will Reach India This Year

MediaTek Says MT6595-Based 4G LTE Octa-Core Phones Will Reach India This Year
At an event in Delhi on Monday, the Taiwanese chip-maker MediaTek announced the commercialisation of its latest SoC - the 4G LTE-enabled octa-core MT6595. Devices using this SoC should arrive in the Indian market by the end of the year.
The new MediaTek MT6595 SoC is a premium product, and wouldn't be found in many entry-level devices, according to Dr. Finbarr Moynihan, General Manager - Corporate Sales International, MediaTek. According to Moynihan, MediaTek will offer a wide range of LTE products in the entry and mid-level, but the MT6595 also shows that the company, which is still largely associated with budget handsets, plans to have a role in all levels of the market.
Moynihan also noted that the shipments for the company have been bigger than expected, with 350 million chips shipped in 2014; he added that of this, 30 million will be LTE chips, double the 15 million that the company was earlier expecting.
This SoC had first been announced by MediaTek in February and reports suggest that the successor to the Xiaomi Redmi Note will be powered by the MT6595.
Based on the ARM big.LITTLE technology and powered by Cortex-A17 architecture, MediaTek MT6595 comes with a 600MHz PowerVR GPU and support for dual-channel DDR3 RAM. This is the 32-bit version of the chip, but Moynihan also said that a 64-bit version of the chip, named the MT6795, will be launched in the near future.
Moynihan also noted that the new SoC is around 60 percent more efficient, so it should lead to an improvement in battery life on phones. However, it also supports a huge number of multimedia features, including an ultra-HD display, 120 fps screen refresh and hardware support for features such as post-processing of videos, to support image stabilisation and face "beautification." The phone can record 4K video and supports a 20-megapixel camera, while Moynihan also noted that the AnTuTu benchmark for the reference device was a whopping 47,233.
However, all this is simply the potential of the chip. Device manufacturers will get to decide which features to use and not to use, and this will in turn have an impact on pricing. Even so, customers can expect phone prices to be on the higher side.
"[The] volume will be good but it will not be a huge seller," said Moynihan. "Over time the features will trickle all the way down to the entry level as well. It will take some time, and we believe that the next year will be very exciting for LTE handsets, but you can anticipate plenty on 3G too."
Moynihan also reiterated that MediaTek is investing heavily in research and development, pointing out a recent investment in San Diego and also mentioning the fact that MediaTek will be spending $200 million (approximately Rs. 1,225 crores) on research and development in India over the next few years, where it has facilities in Noida and recently, Bangalore.
